this was taken from wikipedia, it was under the definition of fan but had a little side info about fangirls.
[link])
"The term fangirl can be used to describe a female member of a fandom community (counterpart to the masculine "fanboy"). Fangirls may be more devoted to emotional and romantic aspects of their fandom, especially shipping. However, it is commonly used in a derogatory sense to describe a girl's obsession with something, most commonly a male teen idol or an aspect of Japanese pop culture. Fangirl behavior can vary in intensity. On one end of the scale are those that, while harboring a crush on a particular actor or character, are perfectly capable of understanding that the fulfilment of the crush is never going to happen. On the other end are the girls who are said to be obsessive in their claims on a fictional character, even fighting with other fangirls over who 'owns' the character in question. Fangirl behavior can fall anywhere in this spectrum, but the closer someone is believed to be towards the obsessive end, the more derogatory the use of the term 'fangirl' to describe them is perceived to be. Fangirls of all persuasions are believed to be the largest contributors to fanfiction websites, sometimes disregarding the canon storyline of their fandom or altering it to fit either their own favored romantic pairings; or themselves into the continuity."
they pretty much hit it right on the nose.
admitting to the fact that i am indeed in the catagory of fangirl, id like to post my opinion of them anyways.
this isnt meant to be offensive to anyone that this might apply to. just saying what i see.
as the wikipedia defination mentioned, the intensity of a fangirls behavior varies. theres those who can deal with reality that they will never be with whoever star they are fangirling over, and then theres those who take it waaaaaaay too far. me, i am one of those who can accept the fact that no, im never going to be with koki, shun, kyo...aswell as others that i myself fangirl over at times. sure i enjoy the dorky things they do or the nice pictures they take but i dont take it so far to where its like "OMG PLZZ MARRY ME KYO!!!" or something like that.
but unfortunately, from seeing things on the communities that i am a part of, alot of the people on them are the ones that tend to overdo it just a little bit. ive noticed with jrock bands [like dir en grey or gazette] its not nearly as bad than the jpop bands [like news and kat-tun] but still i think its equally rediculous.
when i see certain posts i just shake my head because the things that are talked about are so...irrelevant.
for example, ive seen my share of posts about dating rumors about the JE boys quite often. it never fails whenever a picture is found of one of them with a female, people start going "oh whos that? where was this at?" etc. some go as far as to bash the girl in the photo because of jealousy, or whatever their supposed reasoning might be...but in truth its most likely because they wish it was them and not the girl in the picture.
what is the point?
we all know as much as we want to ignore it, they are going to date. dont even try to tell me that all those boys in every jpop band is a virgin because its very, very unlikely. its like come on now, how long can they keep the whole squeaky clean act going? thats where doing risque photoshoots [example: jin and yamapi in anan, among others] and singing about not so wholesome things comes into play. its kinda of a way of letting us know that they are hot-blooded males and we all know how guys can be...they are all in their mid to late 20s now, they go out and party just like the rest of us. the difference with them and us is that their lives are documented because they are famous. its sad to say, but once one comes out and says they are engaged or something, their will be a backlash against them, record/movie/drama ratings go down, and the fangirls will go postal. it just baffles me as to why some people make such huge deals about things like that.
what are they famous for in the first place?
its really sad to me how i see so much gossiping over benine things like who they date, because it clouds over the real reasoning we adore these boys in the first place. whether it was because you listened to the music or saw a drama/movie with them in it, thats what we should be talking about. the talent that these boys possess should be what we pay attention to, not their personal lives. we all know they have lives outside of the entertainment industry but it doesnt mean that we need to know everything. dont get me wrong, i get curious about things but i wouldnt go insanely out of my way to find them out or go crazy when i find out something i dont particularly like. some people just get waaay too worked up over things sometimes, its unnecessary.
so come on people, lets get back to reality and not let the fandom go so far to where you just end up making a fool of yourself. alot of people see us that are into this scene as a bunch of rabid fangirls that just drool over the cute asian boys, but little do they know some of us actually have brains and arent in it for just that.
